For our preliminary task; which was a practice music video. We had to plan, create, direct and film a video to the song 'Nothing compares to you' by Sinead O'Connor.
When planning our music video we were wuite disapointed at the song itself as we thought there would not be alot of ideas that could come from it. Then we actually looked at the song lyrics themselves. We incorporated the lyrics in with the visuals. This is following Andrew Goodwin's theory; 'There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. In the beginning of the song the lyrics start of byt saying the amount of days that the 'boyfriend' had been away. So we decided to use this idea for the visuals the whole way through the song by number paper hearts and ripping them up in different edited scenes the whole way through the song.
In our video there is a lot of close-ups of the artist (lysette) singing. In the original video for this song there is also a lot closeups of her singing. We wanted to develop on this by doing the same thing; though not copying it. In this case we used Goodwin's thoery of; 'There will be a high demand on the part of the record company for a lot of close-ups of the main artist or vocals. We did this to show the emotion in the singers face just like the original music video.
In class we looked at all of our music videos; evaluating all of them and giving them a mark we feel they deserve. The feedback from our group was highlighting the fact our editing and lipsyncing was very good. Mostly our editing was our strength, when it came to our weaknesses us, the class and the teacher felt we needed more depth in our video. We needed different scenes of the artist and just a bit morevideo instead of the scenes we edited like the ripping of the hearts.
From this task I have learned that it is easier to film everything you need all at once. If the actor is there and the mis-en-scene is good it will likely look good on camera. Also it is not a waste of time just to try different shots. On the next video I do I think I will have to plan a lot more and also think of the various number of shot distances I can use aswell.
