Andrew Goodwin's theory

Andrew Goodwin's Theory: Dancing in the distraction

  • There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals (with visuals either illustration, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.

  • There is a relationship between the music and the visuals (again visuals either illustrate, amplify or contradict the music.)

  • Particular music genres may have their own music video style and iconography (such as live stage performance in heavy rock.)

  • There will be a demand on the part of the record company for a lot of close-ups of the main artist or vocalist.

  • There is likely to be reference to voyerism, particularly in the treatment of females, but also in terms of systems of looking (screens within screens, binoculars, cameras, etc...)

  • There are likely to be intertextual references, either to the other music videos or to fims and TV texts.

We looked at some music videos that use these theories. I will posting another blog that explains how certain music videos use the theories.
